In perfumery, orange blossom has a floral, waxy, sweet, powdery, and green scent. Compared to the essence of Neroli obtained with similar flowers, the orange blossom smells more heavily.
The bitter orange blossom being too fragile to withstand distillation, the Arabs, fond of these scents, perfected a still, making it possible to separate the material from its volatile constituents by water vapor.
Orange blossoms are intended for the design of oriental and floral arrangements. For a ton of flowers, bring a ton of water to a boil. The vapor carries with it the volatile compounds that give the flowers their characteristic fragrance. From the still emerges the essential oil, called neroli intended for perfumery, and the hydrosol which is orange blossom water, used in particular in oriental pastries.
This flower is used to produce orange blossom water.
Do not confuse orange blossom water with orange blossom essence, an essential oil obtained from sweet orange blossom (Citrus sinensis), and with neroli essence.
Today, Morocco is one of the first producers of this flower whose products obtained are diverse and highly sought after: neroli (for which 1000 kg of flowers are needed to produce 1 liter), orange blossom water, orange blossom absolute (obtained by extracting the flowers with volatile solvents).
It is not far from Rabat, in the Khemisset region, that thousands of shrubs and trees with spindle leaves, persistent and shiny, are planted: Citrus aurantium - more commonly known as sour orange.
For 150 years, orange blossom has been harvested in the Alpes-Maritimes at the end of April - the beginning of May.
The white flowers are hand-picked with patience and precision.
They are then sorted: in fact, the large leaves and insects are removed.
On harvest evenings, the flowers are brought to the cooperative and then weighed to the nearest gram.
In the evening, they are spread out on the ground for the night and the next morning, they take place in the still.
The leaves and precious flowers are recognized as sedatives, as are the various essential oils that are extracted from them.
This is why, surfing the wave of natural products, medicines, and aromatherapy, many companies are developing more and more products based on orange blossoms most widespread use remains in perfumery and cosmetics.
Regarding well-being, orange blossom has relaxing and soothing properties. The essential oil is recognized for its tonic, sedative, and antidepressant properties. Orange blossom helps calm anxiety attacks, promotes sleep, and helps relax.
